Hi Testing77, and welcome to the VMware Communities!
When installing Mavericks, the OS X Installer should show two hard disks. One of them contains the Mavericks installer – It'll be partitioned with Apple Partition Map (not GPT), and you won't be able to unmount it.
There should be a second hard disk, partitioned GPT, formatted HFS+, named "Macintosh HD", and otherwise empty, onto which the OS will be installed.
Does the second (empty) hard disk not show up when you try to install Mavericks?
